Founded in 2012, the Airlie Beach Trashbags is the flagship team of the newly formed Whitsunday Roller Derby League Inc.
Our next Fresh Meat intake begins in early March 2014. guys and girls 18+ are welcome to come to the info night on Tuesday 4th March at the PCYC from 6pm. Fresh meat training commences 7th March and runs every Friday night.
Our next home game is scheduled for 26th April 2014 at the Whitsunday PCYC, spectators welcome.
As a new league in a remote area, our doors are always open to new skaters, to experienced skaters moving to Airlie Beach, and to guest coaches and trainers joining us to share skills. Please send us a message via this page, or email us at abtrashbags@hotmail.com to introduce yourself.
Roller derby is the fastest growing women's sport in the world and once you fall under its spell, you're in for life! The majority of players are women, but there are mens teams springing up around the country, and the world, and co-ed bouts are not unheard of. Guys wanting to join typically turn to refereeing, as it gives them the derby buzz, even if they can't play.
Volunteers are always needed. Derby is not like the sports you grew up playing as a kid where your dad might've been the coach, and your mum worked on the canteen. Derby is a new sport, and none of us grew up playing it. Our parents are still being introduced to it, in most cases, and in a regional area like the Whitsundays, most of us live away from our families anyway, so finding helpers isn't as easy as it is in some other sporting clubs.
There are so many volunteer roles we need help with from selling tickets at the door, to manning the penalty box and recording penalties, and managing the scoreboard software.
If you can't or don't want to play, but still want to be involved, we will welcome you with open arms and teach you the ropes.
Derby is amazing. It is fun, fast, athletic, rough, and intense. We are strong, fierce, proud women who love it with all our hearts and we hope you will too!
